History and development

Home Science in India has a short history. Between 1920's and 1940's under the British administration the concept of Home Science was limited and referred to as Domestic Sciences, Domestic Economics and Household Craft, introduced mainly in secondary schools.

Baroda became a significant nucleus of Home Science in 1950 when the 1st Faculty of Home Science was established. In mid-1960 and 70's another land mark was made where the Agricultural Universities were established in most of the States. Home being an important unit of production and consumption, the need of Home Science education was recognized in most of the Agricultural Universities and many Home Science Colleges were started. Keeping in view the crux of Marathwada region and the dearth of educational facilities for upgrading and improving rural living standards, Home Science education became a part of Agricultural Universities since 1970 due to its pivotal role in promotion of quality living in an agrarian country like India. The mandate of Home Science education in Agricultural Universities emerged due to the increased awareness about the women’s contribution in family welfare and at economy front.

The Government decided to establish a Agricultural University at Parbhani as it is centrally located in Marathwada, for the development of agriculture in Marathwada region. Marathwada Agricultural University was established on 18th May 1972, very recently the nomenclature is expanded as Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth to develop agri-allied technologies and to fulfil the needs of this region. Considering the basic needs of agriculture, the University started various levels of higher education (UG, PG, Ph.D) in Agriculture, Food Technology, Agricultural Engineering, Home Science, and Horticulture, Agricultural Business management, Biotechnology and so on.

Maharashtra State has four Agricultural Universities. Out of the four VNMKV is privileged to have the College of Home Science as one of the constituent Colleges working for the upliftment of rural and urban families/communities.

Growth of Institution
  • The College of Home Science was established in 1976 as one of the constituent Colleges of the Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth, Parbhani. Initially, the College used to offer only undergraduate programme of 3 years duration from 1976 to 1997. Later on during 1998-99 it was switched over to 4 years (3+1) UG programme with more focus on vocationalization for creating lot of self employment opportunities. Since 2002-03 it was shifted to 2+2 B. Sc. (Homes.) degree programme. The Postgraduate programme of 2 years duration in the disciplines of Foods and Nutrition and Family Resource Management were initiated in the year 1980-81.
  • The Home Science curriculum was revised in 2007 as per the recommendations of IV Deans Committee. Further since 2012-13 the Experiential Learning Programmes have been implemented at under graduation level to strengthen the professionalism in students. Later on in the year 1991-92, the PG programmes’ in Human Development and Family Studies and Ph.D. programme (by course work) in Foods and Nutrition were initiated in this College under FAO-UNDP, H.Sc. mega education and research project. PG programmes’ syllabus in the Dept. of Foods and Nutrition, Human Development and Family Studies and Family Resource Management and Ph.D. programme in Foods and Nutrition Department were revamped as per the recommendations of National Core Group ICAR, New Delhi and it has been implemented since 2009-10 onwards.
  • In the present era of liberalization, privatization and globalization, the graduates are required to be equipped with professional knowledge and skills. To meet this emerging demand, theory is well supported by practical and hands on learning experiences in under graduation studies. Further if they desire to have self employment, the professional knowledge and skills gained during education will help the students to opt for self-employment by starting their own entrepreneurial units.
  • The faculty had implemented several innovative researches and extension projects either independently or in collaboration with many reputed institutions. All India Coordinated Research Project has been implemented in the College since 1997 with five Senior Scientists, five RAs and five SRFs.
  • Some of these projects were financed by national and international agencies like ICAR, DST, RGSTC, MCAER etc. The Faculty runs Lab Nursery School since 1976 and Child Guidance & Family Counselling Clinic since 1991. Subsequently Teens Guidance and Counselling Clinic; Family Guidance and Counselling Clinic, Nutri-Health Clinic and Physical Fitness Clinic were established.
Present Status of Institution

At present the institution is running B.Sc. (Hons) Home Science with ELP and PG programme in three departments i.e. Foods and Nutrition, Human Development and Family Studies and Family Resource Management along with Ph.D. programme in Food science and Nutrition. Counselling is provided through well-equipped Guidance Clinics regarding developmental assessment of children & counselling to the parents & teachers to optimize child development, Nutri-Health Clinic and Physical Fitness Clinic. All India Coordinated Research Project in Home Science is in operation in all the five disciplines of the College.

Extension is another major activity of Home Science education. Because of which, the faculty is able to reach the rural families, in general and rural women in particular, in disseminating the knowledge, imparting the skills and techniques related to the Home Science field, so as to improve the welfare of the families and to uplift their living standards. Different types of Home Science extension education programmes such as extension camps, exhibitions, radio talks, TV programmes, training programmes, workshops, publications, Demos, diagnostic & developmental assessment camps, entrepreneurial guidance & counselling and so on are organized in rural, slum and urban areas for empowering families to lead quality life.

Initially the focus of the Home Science education was restricted to the welfare of the family. Later with the changing scenario of 21st century the focus is expanded to professionalism in Home Science for opening more avenues for jobs and self-employment.

Institutional Planning and Monitoring Processes
  • The administrative Head and also the DDO of the institution is Associate Dean and Principal and is responsible for planning, co-ordinating and monitoring the mandatory activities of the academic staff such as teaching, research and extension in consultation with the concerned Heads of the Department. The Associate Dean conducts monthly meeting along with the Vice-President Gymkhana and members of the Students Council to maintain congenial and pleasant healthy environment among the students.
  • The various cells like education, research, extension, examination, students’ guidance and counselling have been established for smooth functioning of academic activities. Besides this, to maintain excellent discipline and study environment in the Faculty and Hostel premises Anti-Ragging Committee has been formulated to take care of it.

Adoption of ICAR Model Act and Guidelines

The faculty has fully adopted ICAR model act and guidelines for implementation of all educational, research and extension programmes.

Academic programmes and curricula

UG and PG programmes

(A) Under Graduation

The College of Home Science with three-year degree programme commenced from 1976-77. The intake capacity was 32 and the students passed from XII standard in 10+2 pattern or equivalent were admitted. The degree programme was designed to have three years multidisciplinary education in different branches of Home Science and Agriculture. The total credit load was 109. The curriculum was revamped in 1986 and the total credit load was made as 110. With changing trends the curricula was again refurbished in 1996. The change in the syllabi the 3+1 degree programme constituted of three years core and allied courses with specialization in the VII semester in a particular discipline. In the VIII semester students have to undergo Implant Training and Rural Home Science Work Experience. In 2002 the College has adopted the enriched curriculum of B.Sc. (Hons.) 2+2 comprising of 160 credits. The course curriculum of Home Science B.Sc. (Hons) (2+2) has been implemented as per the directives of IV Deans Committee since 2007. The Curriculum has been modified with incorporation of ELP programme in the year 2012-13.

(B) Post Graduation

The post-graduation programme in the College of Home science was implemented from 1980 in two departments i.e. Foods & Nutrition and Home Management with an intake capacity of 4 students in each. The PG programme in Child Development & Family Relationships with the intake of 4 students and Ph.D. programme in Foods & Nutrition with intake capacity of two were launched since 1990 under FAO-UNDP project. PG programmes in the Depts. of Foods and Nutrition, Human Development and Family Studies and Family Resource Management and Ph.D. programme in Foods and Nutrition Department were revamped as per the recommendations given by the National Core Group ICAR, New Delhi and it was implemented in 2009-10. Apart from the Home Science courses, the courses from the Dept. of Economics and Statistics, Computer Science, Bio Chemistry, Agricultural Engineering, Food Technology, Agricultural Extension, Economics and Statistics plus 6 Non-Credit Compulsory Courses are included in the curriculum to have integrated agro based interdisciplinary approach in education.

Mode of Admission

Central admission at MCAER level is done for UG & PG. Selection for admission of new candidates to the first semester of undergraduate courses is made in accordance with the regulations made by MCAER, Pune from time to time.

Academic regulations formulated by the University are followed and time-to-time minor revisions are made which are approved by the Statutory Bodies.

Curricula Development / Revision Process
  • The course curriculum of Home Science B.Sc. (Hons) 2+2 is revamped after every ten years period. However since 2007 it has been revamped twice to meet the ever changing educational demands. The Curriculum is modified for incorporating Experiential Learning Programme from the academic year 2012-13.
  • PG programme in the Dept. of Foods and Nutrition, Human Development and Family Studies and Family Resource Management and Ph.D. programme in the Dept. of Foods and Nutrition Department were revamped as per the recommendations of National Core Group ICAR, New Delhi and it was implemented in 2009-10.
Adoption of ICAR Model Curricula and Deviation

The College has adopted the curriculum approved by the ICAR with 20 per cent changes as per the regional needs. It encompasses of 160 credits in the B.Sc. (Hons) H.Sc 2+2 degree programme.
